Introduction to Headings

Headings can easily be overlooked when creating content for your website, afterall we're focussed on creating the body of the content and making it as good as it can be. But headings can and do play an important role in our content and used properly can provide benefites for the end user and for your SEO efforts (don't forget to check out our other SEO content for more tips).

Different Heading Levels

There are 6 different levels of headings, from level 1 to level 6 with a level 1 heading being the most important on a web page. These are commonly referred to a H1 to H6.

Use of Headings in Content

With headings carrying an element of importance for SEO, there can be a temptation to add headings for the sake of it or even stuff keywords into them. It's important to remeber though that search engines are wise to this kind of thing and misusing headings can have a negative impact on SEO.

When using headings in your content, it's important that you think about what's best for the user. If the heading won't add anything for the user, leave it out.
