Code 60 was brought in to act as a similar solution to the Virtual Safety Car in Formula 1, with drivers required to slow to 60 km/h when the purple and white flags were shown.

More information on the purpose of code 60 can be found in this PDF on the BRSCC website.

The BRSCC has however, suspended its use for the rest of the 2017 race season citing a number of issues including:

  • Visibility of flags
  • Race re-start procedure
  • Speed regulation

Bernard Cottrell, Chairman of the BRSCC said there had been a groundswell of opinion about the use of the procedure and as such it was not going to be used for the rest of the season. The safety car will once again be being used for all instances where the marshalls safety needs to be assured.
